History of the Court

The Kickapoo Tribal Court represents the inherent sovereign authority of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma and the Tribe’s longstanding commitment to justice, self-government, and the protection of its people.

In 1987, the Tribe entered into an agreement allowing the Sac and Fox Tribal Court to provide judicial services while the Kickapoo Tribe worked toward establishing its own independent court system. In 1991, the Kickapoo Council approved the Tribal Judicial System Ordinance, and the Tribe began administering its own judicial system at the Kickapoo Tribal Complex.

Over the years, the judicial system has continued to grow and now includes the Trial Court, Family Court Division, and Supreme Court. Together, these courts provide a fair and impartial forum for civil, criminal, family, juvenile, and other matters arising under Tribal law.

Today, the Kickapoo Tribal Court continues to uphold the laws and traditions of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma while protecting individual rights, promoting public safety, strengthening families, and ensuring access to justice. The Court remains committed to fairness, integrity, cultural respect, and the preservation of Tribal sovereignty for present and future generations.

West of Kickapoo Street, Shawnee, OK

The Court shall have Personal & Subject Matter over the following individuals:

Members of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma
Persons that are enrolled members of a federally recognized Tribe that reside in the jurisdiction of the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma
Non-Indian or Non-Tribal members that are named as a defendant in a case, who consent to the jurisdiction of the Court.
